What is the purpose of tryouts?    

Tryouts are used to evaluate a player’s ability to help with team/league placement in the following season.   At each tryout, players cycle through 4 stations – hitting, infielding, outfielding and pitching.  These are managed by independent evaluators from local baseball instructional centers/AAU teams.  The results from these sessions are used in conjunction with coach evaluations made at the end of the prior season.    See our website for more information on league placement.

What equipment am I required to purchase?

The only equipment you need to provide is a glove for your child.   The league provides bats, balls and helmet, although this equipment is well used and not always perfectly suited to smaller players.     Every spring, Dick’s Sporting Goods provides a 20% off coupon to be used on a designated weekend.  Check hopkintonlittleleague.org for more information.

What are the new bat regulations?

The new regulations will not impact the 2017 season, please note that as of January 1, 2018, the new USA Baseball Bat Standard will be implemented. Little League-approved baseball bats that are approved for use for the 2017 season will no longer be acceptable for use in any Little League game or activity starting on January 1, 2018.  These regulations apply to ALL Little League Baseball® Levels (Tee-Ball through Majors).  

There are NO changes to the bat standard or regulations for Little League Softball®

What is the team uniform?

Hopkinton Little League provides a shirt/jersey, hat/visor and socks for every player.  

  • You need to provide pants and a belt.   For the little kids (below Double A in Baseball and 10U in Softball), the children do not need baseball/softball pants.  Shorts are not recommended for practices where children will be sliding. They are not permitted during games.   In the older leagues, coaches sometimes request a specific color of pants.  
  • Cleats are optional. (Feel free to re-use cleats from another sport.)   Athletic shoes must be worn at a minimum.

How do I volunteer?

During registration, you can indicate how you want to volunteer with the league – coach, assistant coach, etc.    If you would like to volunteer after you have registered, please send a message to .    You will need to complete a volunteer application before being permitted to help at games or practices.

**In the draft leagues, teams are made based on player abilities, in an effort to ensure teams are a mix of skills.   Team swapping is not permitted after the draft, so there is less flexibility with practice slots.   In non-draft leagues, practice conflicts can generally be worked through, even after teams are formed.

Is any sensitive information about my child viewable to the public?

No.  Only the head coach and assistant coaches have access to information (DOB, Grade, Phone, Email, Address, allergies).  Parents on your team only have access to Phone & Email.  Nobody else can see any of the information.

How will this information be used?

Your information will only be used for league and team communications, such as game cancellations and volunteer opportunities.  Your information will never be used or disclosed to any third party.

How do I log on to hopkintonlittleleague.org for the first time?

Click "Sign in" on the upper right of page, then click "Forgot Password".  Input the email address you used to register your child.  An email will be sent to you with a link.  Click the link and put in your password.  Return to the website and log in with your email and new password. 

How do I view the game schedule?

Click the "Team" tab, then select the division and team.  Then click the "Team" tab again, then "Schedule".  Schedules are available beginning in late March.

I can’t remember if I have registered my child.  How do I check?

Log into hopkintonlittleleague.org and click "My Account" in the top right corner.  This will show your registration history.
What does it cost to play baseball/softball?

The cost differs by league and ranges from $140 - $195.  This amount includes the base fee and a $30 Field Maintenance Fee.

Is there financial aid available?

HLL welcomes all children regardless of their financial circumstances. For those that need financial assistance, please e-mail hopkintonlittleleague@gmail.com to request assistance.

When is the baseball/softball season?

Practices generally begin April 1 and games begin the 4th weekend of April.  The season goes through mid-June.

What is the Dog House?

The Dog House is a concession stand available at both EMC Park and Carrigan.   It is open during games.  Parent with children in the older leagues (10U+ for softball and Double A+ in baseball) are required to work the Dog House once per season.   You can pay during registration to opt out or may hire an approved high school student to work your shift.   The list of approved workers is available from your coach.

My child had aged out of baseball.  Are there any other options?

How are summer teams determined?

All team coaches (head and assistants) are asked to complete a detailed evaluation of each player where they rate a player's hitting, fielding, and pitching skills, in addition to their overall game knowledge.  All evaluations are treated equally and an assistant coach rating is given the same weighting as a head coach.  Finally, all of the coaches are asked to "force rank" all of the players on the team given what they have seen in both games and at practices.

All evaluations are then confidentially submitted to the League Information Officer who compiles all of the data and generates a consolidated report for each of the leagues.  This report contains a consolidated average score for each of the players as well as their pitching and hitting statistics that were provided by the head coach.

All league head coaches then meet to discuss all of the players in the league.  The coaches are provided with the consolidated rankings and statistics for every player in the league.  Each coach is also asked to verbally discuss each player (in confidence) on their own team and the other coaches are asked to provide verbal input based on what they have seen as an opposing coach during games.  At the conclusion of the discussion, all league head coaches individually and confidentially "force rank" all of the kids in the league for each age group.

These rankings are then submitted to the League Information Officer who consolidates all of the rankings and produces a "forced rank" list that the League uses to contact players in the order that they were ranked within their age group by the league's head coaches.  (Note: As the information is consolidated, the head coach ranking for a player on his/her team is not included in order to further ensure that there is no bias.)

Note:  a child will not be considered for a summer team if they have not played in at least 80% of the regular season games and scrimmages.

 

How do I find out if a game or practice is canceled?

If you provided your email and cell phone during registration, you are signed up to receive automated messages in the event of a league-wide cancelation.   In other cases, a coach might email you with a team-specific cancelation.
